Varkala

Varkala is a small town inside the southern Kerela , situated inside the tiruvananthapuram district . It is famous for it’s black sand and yellow beaches and religious sites for Hindus . Inside India in very less space you have a beach and the cliff . The city situated in the cliff and the view of the arabian sea from there is just wonderful . Varkala is specially famous for the sunset spot . This place is famous for it’s resorts and surfing . Lot’s of people come here for the water sports .

Janardan swami temple :

Janardan swami temple is some of the oldest temple in southern India and believed that this temple was build by the Devatas . But actually by the history it was build in the 12 th century . The main deity in this temple is Lord Vishnu . Lots of people make pindadana in this place , for that reason it is called the south Gaya .

There is lots of Mythological stories associated with the temple . Once Bhrambha was disrespected by other devatas . Then bhrambha crushed them to become humans in Earth . For get rid of this they penance here for Vishnu . There is also lots of other stories about the temple . People believed that the idol of Vishnu was floated here on a Big Flower .

In this tree you can see lots of dolls tied up . Those couples don’t have children they prayed here for children .

This temple is opened from 4 am – 12 pm and 5 pm – 8 pm daily and entry is free for Hindus .

Papanasham Beach :

Varkala Beach

This is the main beach in Varkala which is famous as Papanasham beach also . Some mythological Hindu stories relating to the Narada Muni and Bhrambha is related to this . Hindu people worship here to get rid of their sins .

It is also famous among the indian as well as foreign tourists as a beach destination . Sunset from this beach is very beautiful

Life guards don’t allow people to go inside sea after sunset .

Shivagiri mutt :

Shivagiiri Mutt is one of the religious and spiritual place in Kerala .

. Narayan Guru a reformist established a temple dedicated to goddess saraswati . As he want to educated the untouchable in the keralian societies so he dedicated this temple to Godess Saraswati .

Inside the asram , in one place the ashes of the guru has been established

Temple is opened till the afternoon 12 pm and second time the temple opens iaround 4 : 30 pm

Varkala Tunnel :

Varkala Tunnel is one of the architectural achievements of the travancore kingdom . For carrying the goods from travancore to kollam by waterways there is a gap in Varkala . For filling this gap , in 1877 and 1880 two tunnels were build here . So the supply of goods can be easy from the north to south . At that time backwaters were mainly used for inland transport .

Previously it was regularly used but now a days due to heavy silting this tunnels are non operational .

Edava Beach :

Edava Beach

Edava beach is a lonely beach in the southern part of the Varkala city centre . It is 3-4 km in south from the Varkala Beach . It is the mix of the black and the yellow sand .

If you don’t like too much crowd then this beach is perfect spot . There is lots of coconut trees around this place .

Varkala Aquarium :

This is a new attraction in Varkala and it is situated between the Black sand Beach and the Odayam Beach . This is a three storied building and the aquarium are situated in the wall side . When you go up in the spiral way you can see the fishes .

The beach is opened between the 10 : 00 am – 6 : 30 pm and entry fees is 30 INR .

Coir processing centre :

All kerela is part of the coconut fibre and rope production centre . In the outskirt of the village of Varkala you can see the processing of this . How the coconut fibers were made .

Summary :

Varkala is a touristy town famous for it’s pristine beaches and some religious sites . There is lots of mythological stories about the Janardan Swami temple in Varkala . There is coir processing centre near to the varkala town . Varkala tunnel is an architectural marvel of the travacore kingdom . Mostly foreigners and youngstars come here for surfing and the water sports .
