Surabaya is a major port and the business hub . There is very less tourist attraction but still people come here for ampel market , a epicentre for the freedom fight and famous cigaratte factory . The city was named as the shark and crocordile fight . There is a interesting monument which depicts that . It is also a major Rail Hub . From this place you will get trains to all the places in Java . It is almost the centre point Indonesia length wise . So from here connecting any part of the Indonesia is much easy .
House of Sampoerna :
House of Sampoerna is the biggest attraction in Surabaya and headquarter of the one of the prestigious cigarette company of Indonesia Dji sam soe . Here you can how actually the cigarette are made , rolled and packed . Different items used to make it are preserved in the Museum . This is both the cigarette and clove processing centre .
The main building was established by the Dutch in 1862 and later in 1932 Samporna company purchased it from them .
It is opened between 9 am – 6 pm and the entry is free .
Masjid National Al Akbar :
Masjid National Al Akbar is the second biggest mosque in Indonesia which is also known as the Great Surabaya Mosque . It was established by the preside of Indonesia Mr KH Abdurrahman Wahid on 10 th November 2000 .
It was identified from far for it’s main blue half egg sized main dome and four dome sarrounding it . The total area of the mosque is 28509 sq meter and it has a big minerate of height 99 m . There is a life by which general public can reach to the top to see the beautiful panoramic view of the city . The Mihrab of this mosque is the biggest in Indonesia .
It is opened 24 hours for the general public and it is situated 14 km south from the main city centre
Tugu Pahlawan :
Tugu Pahlawan (Heroes Monument ) is a big white monument build in the year 10 th November 1952 and inaugurated by the president Sukarno to remember the fight of Independence in 1945 , here in Surabaya . In the fight against dutch in 10 th november 1945 lots of people sacrifice their life for the Independence . This monument is 41 meter in height .
With that there is a 10 th November Museum which was inaugurated by then President in 19 th February , 2000 to explain the story of Independence and the story of fight on that day . There is a graveyard of the unknown heroes in this field , a auditorium , a library and the statues of Sukarno and Hatta on that place .
This monument is closed in Monday and opened in week days between 8 am – 3 pm . It’s entry is entry is free and situated in the centre of the city .
Gereja Santa Perawan Maria :
Gereja Santa Perawan Maria (Church of the birth of the our Lady ) is an important church in Surabaya city . This church was completed on August 5 1990 . The construction was started when the pastor CWJ Wennekar got the land from the dutch Government . In 1945’s fight some of the church got damaged due to independence struggle .
The gerja is opened for the general public in between 8 am – 4 pm and this geerje is situated 5 km from the city centre
Suroboyo Monument :
This statue and the story of this statue is related to the name of the city . In this statue you can see a shark (suro) and a crocordile(boyo) is fighting for the supremecy .
This two animals are the symbols of the fighting between the Warring army and the Raden Widjaya army in 1293 . This statue is situated beside the skate park in Suroboya . The monument is opened 24 hours .
Masjid Cheng Ho :
Cheng ho mosque official name Al Islam Muhammad Cheng hoo Sriwijya Palembang Mosque is dedicated to chines muslim community in the Palembang region and was established in the year 13 th october 2002 . This mosque’s name was inspired by the famous 15 th century chines muslim admiral Zheng and the architecture by the Niu Jie MOsque in Bejing which was established in the 996 AD .
This mosque has mainly three colors inflence Red , Green and Yellow and it’s architecture is the fusion of the Chines , Malay , Arabic and Indonesian architecture . It’s main gate looks like a Pagoda .
The mosque is opened between the 4 am – 10 pm and it is free for the general public
Monumen Kapal selam :
This is a submarine iin the land and used as the Submarine monument or the Monkasel . This KRI Pasopathy 410 is a russian made submarine and was in the service of the Indonesian navy since 29 the January 1962. Later it was decommissioned in the year 1990 . It was taken to the PT .PAL and cut into 16 pieces and assembled here and make this as a museum in 15 th July 1998 .
There is also Video Rama , Live Music , swimming pool and water tourism . entry fees of the ticket is 15000 IDR and the museum is opened between monday to saturday between 9 am – 5 pm .
Pasar Ampel :
This is one of the famous market in Surabaya which is famous for the arabic goods , Dates and perfumes . People also come here for pilgrimage in the Tomb of Sunan Ampel .
This Market existed here since the Dutch colony since 1800 . People come from the different cities of Indonesia to buy Arabic goods .
Summary :
This is not a tourist city and mainly business hub , major port and major railway junction . In Ampel Market you can get arabic items . There were some big and interesting mosque in this city . In 1945’s freedom fight was mainly fought from this city so Tugu Pahalwan is a must visit . In House of samporna you can see the processing of the finest cigarette of Indonesia . May be 1-2 days is enough to visit the local attraction of Surabaya .
