Indonesian Breakfast

Indonesia is a heaven for food lovers . Here food is influenced by the Indian , Chines , Arabic and own Indonesian cuisine . Main ingredient of the Indonesian Breakfast are Nasi(Rice) , any kind of meat , fish or egg and finally Krupak(Papad) or salad . Use of Palm Jiggery is very prominent in Indonesian Cuisine . Indonesia is a huge country and in different island there is different style of food .

Indonesia is predominantly muslim majority country , so here foods are prepared mostly according to the islamic law (Halal Food ) . But inside Toraja of Sulewasi and Flores have different food habits as in those area religions are predominantly christian . If you go toward Timor , fish are most tasty and chicken is very less .

In Indonesia mostly Palm and Corn oil are used for cooking food . by the way Indonesia is the largest producer of edible Palm oil in the World . Use of Different spices and Coconut milk are predominant in Indonesian Cuisine . In the evening you can have different types of snacks made from Tohu (paneer made from soyabin milk) , banana , tempeh , potato , cabbage , cauliflower . Another items which are part of Indonesian cuisine are drinks – it may be cold coffee , fruit tea , fruit juice or Ice cream . They always ask you when are you in a restaurant . Indonesian are really fond of ice cream and it is really cheap .Street foods are very cheap in Indonesia so you can enjoy the food very well .

My favourite Food in Indonesian Cuisine :-

1. Nasi Goreng :-

Nasi goreng / Fried Rice is a typical Indonesian food which can be availed anywhere in Indonesia . Normally this item is served with Fried egg .

Price : It ranges from 10000 IDR – 60000 IDR in street stalls to moderate hotel.

Nasi Ayam :-

Here Rice is served with the Fried chicken and there is also salad with it . If you want , you can ask for some coconut currey or sayur . (vegetables ) with it .

Price : It can be brought in the price range of (10000 – 60000) depending upon the Restaurant . In Sumatra you can get it as low as 10000 IDR but the same thing in Ubud (Bali ) can be upto 100000 IDR .

3. Mie Goreng :-

Mie Goreng is specially chow min in India . Where Noodles are fried with high heat with different vegetables and maybe with egg .

Price : It can be from (8000 – 50000 IDR) depending on the restaurant .

4. Pisang Goreng :-

Pisang Goreng (Ripen banana snaks) is very popular among the Indonesian people . In the evening time you can find it in the any corner of road . Prices are also very cheap . In india you can find banana cheap but that are made by the green Banana but here it is made from the Ripen Banana .

Price : Price for one piece is 1000 or 2000 IDR depending on the Restaurent

5. Soto Ayam :-

Soto is a soup type of food made of different vegetables and pieces of fried Chicken and Lemon and maybe a boiled egg . It is also served with rice . Among the food in Indonesia I find this food is most Healthy .

Price : Price ranges from 10000 to 30000 IDR .

6. Bakso :-

Bakso is a type of meatball in Indonesia . It is served with noodles , different vegetables , egg and lots of soup . It is very popular among the Indonesian People and mainly street food .

Price : It is priced between 8000 IDR to 20000 IDR .

7. Roti Bakar :

Roti Bakar is the first item where we use flour in this list . It is normal bread with lots of margarine , chocolate , condensed milk , fresh fruit and lots more . They made it in the Pan and sold whole bread .

Price : It is prices according to the flavour . like price range from 10000 IDR to 50000 IDR depending upon the flavour .

8. Murtabak

Murtabak is a type of food which needs skills for the maker . It is made of the Flour , egg , vegetable and some special mixture . first you have to make big roti type thing by your skill then fried it little then stuffed the mixture of special mixture , vegetables and egg inside it and deep fry . Finally your murtabak is ready . Now cut piece by piece and serve with some salad . There is different variety of Murtabak according to the quantity of egg .

Price : In a same shop according to the count of egg it is prieced between 25000 IDR to 50000 IDR .

9 . Nasi kuning

Nasi Kuning is specially yellow rice . The color is made by the use of termeric . It is served with other dishes . It is popular among the Indonesian people and good for Health .

Price : It is priced similar like different items .

10 . Tahu goreng :

Tahu are made from the milk of the Soyabin Milk . It is a type of Paneer . Fried Tahu is very popular among people . It is also very cheap .

Price : Depending on the size it costs between 1000 – 2000 IDR / piece .

11. Gudeg :-

Gudeg is a special dish mainly found in Central Java made of young Jack fruit cooked for long hour with palm sugar and coconut milk . There you can find some egg with brown color .

Price : It is priced between 20000 – 50000 IDR .

12 . Krupuk:-

Krupuk are inseparable part of the Indonesian cuisine . With every food they add Krupuk for better taste . With Nasi Goreng , Nasi Ayam or different food they add this item .

Price : It is cheap a small packet of Krupuk may be cost 1000 IDR .

13 . Nasi Ikan :-

Ikan means fish in Indonesian Language . InIndonesian Breakfast you can try different types of sea fish or inland fishes . Nasi Ikan is more cheap than the Nasi ayam . I would say if you travel toward Timor fish are very tasty .

Price : It ranges from 10000 – 50000 IDR per plate .

14 . Gado Gado :-

Gado Gado is a type of salad where boiled vegetables and potato are served with hard boiled egg and fried tofu and tempeh .

Price : It costs me 20000 IDR .

15. Nasi Campur

Nasi Campur is a Indonesian food where Rice is served with different vegetables , meat , egg or Fish . It is popular in most of the south east asia .

Price : Depending on the ingrident it costs between 15000 – 50000

16 . Nasi Uduk

Nasi Uduk is a dish where rice is prepared with the help of Coconut Milk . It is served with the different items .

Price : price is similar of the different nasi dishes and mainly popular in Jakarta area .

17 . Tempeh

Tempeh is a type of food made from fermented Soybeans . It is used to make snacks or used as ingredient to make Indonesian dishes .

Price : I don’t know the raw price of this element but Tempeh snacks were sold at the rate of 1000 IDR /piece .

18 . Sate

Sate is a small pieces of grilled meat with lots of spices , stick together by a wooden sticks and served with onion and peanut sauce . It is very popular among Indonesian throughout the country . Mostly it is a type of street food .

Price : It costs from 8000 – 30000 IDR

19 . Lotek

Lotek is a vegetable based salad where sticky rice is mixed with corn bara (it is a fried snacks made of corn ) and lots of vegetables and served with a sauce (this sauce is made of peanut , palm jiggery and lots of spices ). They made this sauce in a specially made wooden pot and crushed it with a specially made wooden piece until it becomes a thick paste .

Price : I eat in a local shop in Yogyakarta around 20000 IDR .

Summary :-

Indonesia is a very diverse country and mix of arab , indian , chines , Malay , dutch and ethenic Indonesian tribes . So it’s food is also very diverse . Sumatra food always have curry and more hot chilies , where javanes food are little dried and sweet where toraja food are mostly pig and buffalo and in Timor food are more oriented toward Fish . I just named some food which are common throught Indonesia and which I see in the streets . In my judgement Sumatra foods are most favourable for Indian . Tofu , Tempeh , Fish , chicken and egg are some elements , which you will find everywhere in Indonesia but getting Indian chapati is very difficult . Noodles , Mie and Nasi goreng are cheapest and available throughout Indonesia .
