Cuttack was established in the year 989 by the somyavanshi king markata kesari . It is a very old town and famous for it’s silver filigree work . Cuttack is also the commercial capital of the Odisha and is surrounded by the river kathajodi and Mahanadi . It’s tourist places include Mahanadi river view , barabati fort , barabati stadium , cuttack chandi temple , Netaji subhas birth museum , Mahanadi barrage , odisha state Maritime Museum and many more . The city is also vary famous for hosting 1000 – 1500 Durga Puja . It is one of the lowest city in India . It is just 26 km from Bhubaneswar and 81 km from Puri .

Where to stay in cuttack :

Cuttack is a old town and previous capital of the state Odisha . There is lots of cheap option for staying in cuttack . Most of the hotels were concentrated near to the Railway station or in the college square . If you take the shared bathroom accomodation then this are the cheapest . Hostel option is not available in cuttack and Attach bathroom rooms will be expensive . I must say the rooms and the bathrooms are clean in most of the cuttack hotels . . I stayed in Shanti lodge (room rent for common bathroom room is 250 INR /24 hours) and in Bombay hotel (room rent for common bathroom room is 300 / 24 hour ) . Here one thing is very good that checkout time is 24 hours from the check in time .Another Hotel name is Ganesh Residency , it is very near to the Railway station but budget rooms are worthless .

Barbati Fort :

Gate of Barabati Fort

This fort was build by the Somvamshi king Marakata kesari in 987 CE . Now a days only the gate , moat and the mount of the nine storied palace was left inside the fort . This fort was later captured by the Mughals , Marathas and British . Now this fort is used for the cultural purpose and historical monument . There is not much to see except the old gate . This is one of the oldest structure still left in Cuttack.

Mahanadi Barrage :

Mahanadi barrage or Jobra barrage is 2km in length and is one of the beautiful places to visit in Cuttack city . This bridge and it’s revetment is used to control the flood in the cuttack city . I visited in the time of summer . At this time you can see one side of the river is full of water and another side almost filled with sand . It is a very old barrage but still operational . The height of the concrete railing is very low inside the barrage, so be careful . Cars were driving over the barrage . Most of the local people come here for relaxation and morning walk .

Odisha State Maritime Museum:

This European styled building was build by British in the year 1868 as a Workshop to supply parts for making and repairing dams in the Bengal , Bihar and Odisha regime under the Bengal Presidency of British India . Later , after independence Odisha Govt changed it into a Museum . In this museum there is a special room showing cultural connection between India and Bali of Indonesia .

Cuttack Chandi Temple :

This is one of the most respected temple of Chandi in the city of Cuttack . Before the temple comes there will be two big gates to mark the entry and exit point to this temple . Stories tells that sculpture of devi was found under ground .In every year Durga puja was celebrated in this temple for 16 days .

Netaji Birth Place Museum :

This is one of the unique place and you must visit this place . Here you can see some memory of Netaji Subhas chandra Basu . You can see the bed room of Netaji Subhas chandra basu . There is lots of things which is connected with the family of Netaji . You can not picture inside the museum .

Mahanadi River view(Sunset point) :

Sunset point in the bank of the river Mahanadi is situated just opposite to the Odisha Maritime Museum . It is a elevated platform made by concrete to see the beautiful sunset in the Mahanadi river . Here Mahanadi river is almost 2-3 km wide and filled with water as this is upper part of the Mahanadi river from the Barriage .

Summary :

Cuttack is a very old town of more than 1000 year and the previous capital of Odisha . Freedom fighter Netai subhas chandra bose was born here . Mahanadi river and the barrage over this river is the most attractive place to visit in Cuttack . Bengali is well spoken and understood in the city of Cuttack . Barbati stadium is the only historical place inside this 1000 year old city .
