Durga puja has been the biggest festival in Bengal , Orissa , assam , tripura and Jharkhand but it has been celebrated through out india . Previously in bengal durga puja were celebrated by the Jamindars and rich royal families in their homes but in 1790 twelve brahmins in guptipara started first community durga puja which is called the sarbojanin durgotsav in bengali . In kolkata the sarbojanin durga puja started mostly in the late 19th century to early 20 th century by various clubs . Now a days what durga puja pandal in kolkata (Pandel is the temporary stage build to accommodate the god idols ) we see are mostly Sarbojanin Puja (worship of god ).
In every pandel , there was , centrally located maa durga’s idol killing the demon mahisasur . On the left side of maa durga there is Kartika and saraswati and in the right side of the durga there is Laxmi and ganesha’s idols .
Now a days durga puja in west bengal is not limited to Hindu people but a complete festival of all religion . In this time people gathered in a huge crowd to see the arts and paintings and the light decorations in the pandals with wearing new dresses . Specially in the night time there were huge crowds in the city and lots of roads were temporarily closed .
